Eldridge Statement on Supreme Court Overturning Roe v. Wade
June 24, 2022
Boston, MA. – Senator Jamie Eldridge issued this statement after a Republican-appointed Supreme Court majority voted to overturn Roe v. Wade:
“The Supreme Court's decision to overturn the Roe vs Wade decision that has protected abortion rights in America for almost 50 years is an atrocious, anti-democratic, destructive assault on reproductive healthcare and health equity for Americans. This decision is a direct attack on fundamental constitutional protection that was historically established through the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.
Massachusetts residents, including elected officials, who care deeply about abortion access, bodily autonomy, reproductive rights, and racial equity must fight back against this court decision. This means demanding that our state government, healthcare institutions, and medical communities preserve and protect reproductive healthcare in Massachusetts, and that state government protects impacted Americans from other states where abortion rights, gender care, and birth control access are already limited.
As the traumatic harm and personal damage of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision begins to take a wrecking ball to our nation's precious freedoms, it is absolutely critical that we actively participate in political and civic activism to elect and support pro-choice public officials, strengthen the movement to expand bodily freedoms, and ensure that our most vulnerable communities have access to supportive resources.
Personally, I will do everything in my power to continue to uphold and protect abortion and privacy rights for women in the Commonwealth and in the Middlesex and Worcester district. To my colleagues in the State House, let’s channel our anger in this unfair decision into positive action.
In closing, I strongly encourage everyone to read the Dobbs decision and to reflect on today's tragic moment in our nation's history.”
