Summer jobs for young people riding on budget decisions
June 3, 2026
Katie Castellani - Worcester Buisness Journal
Sen. Jamie Eldridge speaks during a rally for more funding for youth jobs on Thursday.
About $25 million is needed to fund the 6,000 jobs that advocates desire, but that ask didn’t seem “politically feasible” in a tight budget year, Finfer said. The House-approved fiscal 2027 budget funds the program at about $17.6 million. Gov. Maura Healey’s budget proposal matches the Senate’s at almost $15.4 million.
During a rally held in a packed hearing room at the State House, Sen. Jamie Eldridge of Marlborough backed the amendment, noting he represents a district where fewer families rely on youth jobs for additional income. Eldridge said he was motivated to support the funds after learning about the different challenges young people face in areas where they feel more pressured to get a job and support their family.

I urge continued support for placing this project on the TIP and advancing a solution for the thousands of residents who rely on this route every day.” The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) is the state’s mechanism for committing federal and state transportation funding – getting on it is a critical step toward actual construction.

Statement: State Senate to consider ban on single use plastic bags
April 9, 2026
Janet Domentiz - MASSPIRG
Statement: MASSPIRG urges the State Senate to pass the single use plastic bag ban, included in Senate Bill 3050 – An Act to build resilience for Massachusetts communities.
Boston–If it passes the Senate, an Act to build resilience for Massachusetts communities will bring Bay Staters one step closer to a Commonwealth free of plastic bag litter and waste. Among the many provisions of the recently released bill, this one would reduce the use of single use plastic bags at most retail establishments in Massachusetts. “It’s clear the people of Massachusetts want less single use plastic bags, given that 163 cities and towns have already moved to replace them with alternatives,” said Janet Domenitz, director of MASSPIRG, who runs the zero waste program. “A survey we conducted last summer showed that most shoppers reject single use plastic bags. A state law to reduce plastic waste and reflect what people want makes common sense. The bottom line is that nothing we use for a few minutes should pollute our planet for hundreds of years. We urge the Senate to pass the bag ban.”
Rep. Mindy Domb, Sen. Jamie Eldridge, Sen. Becca Rausch, and many other legislators over the years have championed plastic use reduction, helping build the momentum for the ban in the bill released by the Senate Ways and Means committee yesterday. The bill is scheduled for a full vote of the Senate on Wednesday, April 15.

‘It just requires people to be destitute’: Healey draws criticism over push to tighten eligibility for safety-net program
February 11, 2026
Chris Lisinski - CommonWealth Beacon
FOR MANY YEARS, the most vulnerable people in Massachusetts had to prove to the state they not only earned very little income, but also owned essentially nothing of financial value in order to qualify for a cash aid program meant as a last resort.
The requirement for the Emergency Aid to the Elderly, Disabled, and Children program posed a major barrier, caseworkers and legal aid experts said, keeping assistance out of reach for reasons that in some cases seemed illogical.

Sen. Jamie Eldridge, a Marlborough Democrat who helped lead the push to eliminate the prior limit, said he was “very shocked” to see Healey call for its return. He called the asset test “a cynical policy measure” that “doesn’t hold up.”
“It’s just a very troubling narrative,” Eldridge said, describing himself as wary of the notion that the state’s lowest-income residents “somehow could have tens of thousands of dollars in their bank account.”

No way in and no way out: Beacon Hill hasn’t kept track of which communities qualify for Gateway City status
January 8, 2026
Hallie Claflin - CommonWealth Beacon
THE TERM “Gateway City” was first coined in a 2007 report published by MassINC (the nonprofit civic organization that also publishes CommonWealth Beacon) and originally described just 11 midsize cities outside of Greater Boston that were, and still are, struggling regional economic centers. These cities were major manufacturing hubs yet suffered from the same decline that beset much of the country in the decades since World War II.

Cabral believes Gov. Maura Healey’s administration and the Executive Office of Economic Development are the ones in control of the policy, and legislation is not necessary. Healey’s office declined to answer questions about whether her administration would tweak the current list as former Gov. Patrick’s administration did in 2013.
All of this has left lawmakers like Sen. Jamie Eldridge, who represents Marlborough, confused. He told CommonWealth Beacon he is trying to understand how the city can officially be considered for the grants and benefits, but his questions have gone mostly unanswered.

Massachusetts bill would give workers a heads up before ICE audits
December 27, 2025
Tim Dunn - Boston Herald
A bill is making its way through the Massachusetts State House that would require employers to notify workers ahead of an I-9 audit, allowing any hired illegal immigrants the chance to avoid federal probes into employment eligibility and their individual immigration status.
The bill, "An Act to Notify Employees of an 1-9 Audit" (S. 2665), was filed by state Senator Jason Lewis (-Fifth Middlesex) and would require all employers in Massachusetts to provide workers with a visible notice when an I-9 employment eligibility inspection is scheduled by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), forcing employers to provide this notification at least three days in advance of an inspection.

Sen. Lewis' bill was co-sponsored by fellow Democratic Senators Jamie Eldridge (D-Middlesex & Worcester), Jo Commerford (D-Hampshire, Franklin & Worcester), and Rebecca Rausch (D-Norfolk, Worcester & Middlesex).
The Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development reported the bill favorably at a hearing earlier this month. It now moves on to review by the Senate Ways and Means Committee.

Armory on the Assabet moves closer to completion – earmark by earmark
December 10, 2025
Paul Hopkins - Community Advocate
HUDSON – The Armory on the Assabet community arts center project got another boost on Nov. 21 with the presentation of $100,000 from State Sen. Jamie Eldridge and Rep. Kate Hogan.
The budget earmark brings state support for the renovation project to $380,000 since 2022. The money has been used to acquire the armory and make improvements.
Sen. Eldridge said: “Representative Hogan and I have secured hundreds of thousands of dollars for the armory, to purchase it from the state and to work with the Hudson Area Arts Alliance to design a community performing arts center.”
Eldridge said the $100,000 earmark will assist with capital improvements to the building.
“This is just the beginning – the building will need millions in improvements,” Eldridge added, “but both the Massachusetts Cultural Council and state legislature have a role in securing funding for this incredible, beautiful armory and its future use.”

As Boston faces property tax hikes, Mass. senators are crafting their own bill
December 9, 2025
Sam Drysdale and Matt Prichard - NBC Boston
Facing criticism for not addressing steep tax hikes in Boston and a legislative stalemate on Beacon Hill, the Senate plans to sidestep the House and possibly advance its own proposal that could deliver limited relief in any Massachusetts city or town.

Earlier this week, the Senate took up an extension order (S 2758) granting the Joint Committee on Revenue more time to take action on several bills, including S 1933 and S 1935. But Brownsberger and Collins offered an amendment removing both of their bills from the extension. That maneuver — normally a path toward study, and thus to legislative limbo — instead in this case triggered a Senate rules process that allows the bills to be routed through the Senate’s own procedures and placed directly before Senate Ways and Means.

What is the Safe Communities Act? MA bill would restrict ICE cooperation
December 2, 2025
Margie Cullen - Cape Cod Times
…
She was testifying in support of the Safe Communities Act, a bill that would, among other things, prohibit police from asking about immigration status, during a Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security hearing on Nov. 25.
“I don't think I have tell anyone here in this auditorium about the impact on immigrant communities in each of the cities and towns we represent as a result of the deportation agenda of the Trump Vance administration,” said Sen. Jamie Eldridge, D-Acton, the lead sponsor of the Senate bill (S.1681), adding that immigrant families who have been detained or whose family members have been sent to an ICE facility in another state contact him every couple days.
