State Senator Eldridge calls on President Joe Biden to step down as Democratic nominee

BOSTON, MA - As a State Senator, Democratic State Committee member, and Massachusetts delegate to the 2024 Democratic National Convention, I urge President Joe Biden to withdraw as the Democratic nominee for U.S. President. 

I deeply appreciate President Biden for leading this nation in an incredibly difficult time in America’s history, restoring the economy, investing in infrastructure, protecting reproductive and LGBTQ rights, and combating climate change amongst other issues. While I disagree with President Biden on several matters, I deeply respect his work to successfully advance Democratic policies that have made America stronger.

That being said, I have been concerned about President Biden and his administration's core message to the American people. It lacks a bold, visionary agenda that addresses improving the lives of everyday Americans, reducing inequality, and creating financial security -  issues that are more critical to Americans now more than ever.  

If President Biden remains our nominee, it could negatively impact the election of Democratic Congress members and U.S. Senators leading to dramatic changes in our country.

The Republican nominee, Donald Trump, has offered a seemingly endless array of lies and mischaracterizations, supported by extremist allies to further advance negative, destructive attacks. The 2024 presidential campaign season has already been marred by negativity, including manipulation through social media about the Biden-Harris administration's record, hundreds of millions of dollars in dark money aimed at influencing voters, and a troubling lack of enthusiasm among tens of millions of voters.

We need a Democratic presidential nominee with the strength, vigor, and fighting spirit that can counter Donald Trump and right-wing attacks while simultaneously inspiring confidence in the American people. Our nominee should demonstrate to Americans that the Democratic Party is fighting for a bold vision to significantly improve their lives and build on President Biden’s progress over the past four years. 

I am fully committed to electing a Democratic candidate as the next President of the United States. As an elected official and concerned citizen, I can not remain silent on arguably one of the biggest decisions Americans will make in this century.  I will do everything possible to support the Democratic ticket in this critical election, whether President Biden or another candidate.
