Sen. Eldridge and Rep. Hogan Announce Funding for Maynard to Comply with MBTA Communities Law

Mass Housing Partnership support will guide Maynard on zoning bylaws

BOSTON — State Senator Jamie Eldridge (D-Marlborough) and State Representative Kate Hogan (D-Stow) announced that the Massachusetts Housing Partnership (MHP) will award the Town of Maynard $20,000 to help comply with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Communities law.

The MHP awards technical assistance through the MBTA Communities Zoning Compliance Technical Assistance (3A-TA) program, which towns can use to assist with technical aspects of complying with Section 3A of the state’s zoning act. Section 3A requires all towns and cities with access to the MBTA or which are adjacent to the MBTA to proportionally increase affordable housing units within the community. This funding can be used to identify district boundaries, develop and/or evaluate proposed density requirements, estimate capacity and density, and to draft zoning amendments. The 3A-TA program falls under MHP’s Complete Neighborhood Initiative, and so far has assisted more than 50 communities, totaling to almost $1 million in technical aid.

“I’m grateful to the Mass Housing Partnership  for providing this funding to the Town of Maynard,” said State Senator Jamie Eldridge (D-Marlborough). “I wholeheartedly support the zoning reforms in the MBTA Communities law, and it  is vital that communities have the technical resources to take the necessary steps to increase housing. I’m happy that the 3A-TA program is helping make our communities more welcoming and affordable.”

"I'm very pleased to see the non-profit Massachusetts Housing Partnership and our municipalities working together on housing solutions, one of the most pressing issues we're facing right now,” said Representative Kate Hogan (D-Stow). “With this assistance from MHP, Maynard will be better able to understand the new MBTA Communities Law, the opportunities it presents, and to better plan for the town's future."
